_Imaam Ibn Qudaamah Al-Maqdisi -rahimahullaah-_
Said:
*BUILDING THE HEART ON GOOD MANNERS AND CURING ITS VICES.*
Know verily – may the blessing of Allāh be upon you that, good characters are the attributes of the prophets and the truthful ones, and bad behaviors are ways of shaitan and they are poisonous due to what they may lead to of setback in this dunya thereby affecting the honor of one in the society and in the Hereafter, one may be amongst the losers.
Thus, it is highly recommended that one should know the defects of bad manners and ways of reforming them. In shā Allāh, we will mention some of the vices and ways of refining them in summary.
*THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD CHARACTERS.*
Know verily that, some people have discussed about the surface importance of good characters and its fruits but they did not deal with its actuality and the core importance and some of its fruits are left untouched. Rather, they only mentioned what they know at the spot.
And some thought that, by having good body structure implies that one also have a good character. And they will say; so so person has a good posture and good character. Meaning, both his inward that’s the heart and the outward appearance that’s the body structure are good, for man constitutes both his body and the soul.
And one should also know that, the eyes are only used for seeing while the soul is used for mental perception and for interpreting what the eyes sees, and each one of them has its appearance either good or bad, the soul which is used for mental perception has much status as against the organ that is used for seeing, for this reason, Allāh Ta’āla Has really glorified and honored the soul.
In this regard, Allāh says:
_إِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَائِكَةِ إِنِّي خَالِقٌ بَشَرًا مِّن طِينٍ_
When your Lord said to the angels; Surely I am going to create a mortal from dust.
فَإِذَا سَوَّيْتُهُ وَنَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِي فَقَعُوا لَهُ سَاجِدِينَ
So when I have made him complete and breathed into him of My spirit, then you should fall down making sujud to him.
Suratu sad, verse 72&71.
Here, Allāh relates the body to dust while He relates the soul directly to Himself, subhānahu wa Ta’āla.
Thus, behaviors shows the true color of the heart and what it entails, for it is the one which brings about actions either bad or good. If the acts are good and precious, it is called good behavior, and if it is ugly and bad, it is called bad characters.
