_Imām Ibn Qudāmah Al-Maqdisi -rahimahullāh-_
Said:
*THE CALAMITIES OF THE TONGUE.*
Know verily that, the calamities of the tongue are numerous and the tongue expresses what is in the heart.
The only way to solve these calamities is by keeping silent and speaking less.
In shā Allah, we will mention the benefits of keeping silent and its merits to the society as a whole.
Know that, keeping silent increases one’s determination and it gives room for thinking and pondering on one’s affairs.
In this regard, it is reported from Sahl Ibn Sa’d radiyallāhu anhu who said: The messenger of Allāh sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam said:
_”ﻣَﻦْ ﻳَﻀْﻤَﻦْ ﻟِﻲ ﻣَﺎ ﺑَﻴْﻦَ ﻟَﺤْﻴَﻴْﻪِ ﻭَﻣَﺎ ﺑَﻴْﻦَ ﺭِﺟْﻠَﻴْﻪِ ﺃَﺿْﻤَﻦْ ﻟَﻪُ ﺍﻟْﺠَﻨَّﺔَ._
_”Whoever can guarantee (the chastity of) what is between his two jawbones( I.e his tongue) and what is between his two legs (i.e. his private parts), I guarantee Paradise for him.”_
Transmitted and recorded by Imām Al-Bukhārī in his ‘Sahih’#6474.
Ibn Mashū’d radiyallāhu anhu said:
_Nothing need to be covered and guarded like the tongue._
In another hadith of Muā’dh radiyallāhu anhu, the prophet sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam took hold of his tongue and said to muā’dh:
_” ﻛﻒ ﻋﻠﻴﻚ ﻫﺬا. ﻓﻘﻠﺖ: ﻳﺎ ﻧﺒﻲ ﺍﻟﻠﻪ، ﻭﺇﻧﺎ ﻟﻤﺆﺍﺧﺬﻭﻥ ﺑﻤﺎ ﻧﺘﻜﻠﻢ ﺑﻪ؟ ﻗﺎﻝ: ﺛﻜﻠﺘﻚ ﺃﻣﻚ ﻳﺎ ﻣﻌﺎﺫ! ﻭﻫﻞ ﻳﻜﺐ ﺍﻟﻨﺎﺱ ﻓﻲ ﺍﻟﻨﺎﺭ ﻋﻠﻰ ﻭﺟﻮﻫﻬﻢ ﺃﻭ ﻋﻠﻰ ﻣﻨﺎﺧﺮﻫﻢ – ﺇﻻ ﺣﺼﺎﺋﺪ ﺃﻟﺴﻨﺘﻬﻢ؟_
_“Exercise restraint on it.”. Mu’adh radiyallāhu anhu then said: Oh Messenger of Allah, will we be held responsible for what we say with it?” Thereupon, the Messenger of Allah sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam said: Oh Mu’adh, will anything else cause the people to be thrown in the Hell-Fire upon their faces more than what their tongues has harvested of irresponsible talk._
Transmitted by Imām At-Tirmidhi#(7/362).
Abu Dardāh radiyallāhu anhu said:
_Treat fairly your two ears and your month, for you were given two ears and one month for you to hear more as against speaking._
Ibn Al-Husayn said:
_I have never uttered a statement for the passed fifty years that I would like to be excused regarding it._
Allah Akbar, this shows how the passed predecessors used to safeguard their tongue from irresponsible talk.
