Imām Ibn Qudāmah -rahimahullāh- said:
Third Level.
This is the one who made repentance from a sin and was steadfast on it for a given time. However, he was overwhelmed by the sin due to his desires for it, and lack of capability of subduing it. Though, despite all this, he still stick to obedience in many cases, and he safeguarded himself from many of the sins, but he was just carried away by one or two desires, and he wishes and hopes for Allāh to protect him from it, and he always regret for the sin, this type of soul is referred to as the questioning Soul.
In this regard, Allāh says:
وَآخَرُونَ اعْتَرَفُوا بِذُنُوبِهِمْ خَلَطُوا عَمَلًا صَالِحًا وَآخَرَ سَيِّئًا عَسَى اللَّهُ أَن يَتُوبَ عَلَيْهِمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ
And others have confessed their faults, they have mingled a good deed and an evil one; may be Allah will turn to them (mercifully); surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
Though, such a person must be careful regarding his last day, for death may catch up with him before repenting, and deeds are judged based on the last act.
Fourth Level:
This is one who made tawbah and he was steadfast on it for sometimes, but went back to the sin without thinking of making Tawbah nor regret for his deed, such a person is considered amongst the wrong doers. This is referred to as _the soul that want to command man to evil._
And if proper precaution is not taken, such a person may have a bad ending. But if such person pass away upon tawheed, then there is hope that he will surely come out from hell even though it may take a couple of time depending on his bad deeds and Allāh may shower him with His Mercy due some of his good deeds which are hidden. However, relying only on the mercy of Allāh without taking proper steps to rectify ones shortcomings is highly discouraged.
For some have claimed that;
Verily, Allāh Ta’āla is generous and He is all forgiving, His treasures are spacious, and our sins harm Him not…
But in the case of their worldly gains, they can extend all their efforts in its pursuit.
And if it was said to them:
Since you used as a pretext that the treasures of Allāh is all encompassing so you need not to work towards salvation, then why don’t you just sit at home so that Allāh may provide sustenance for you there?
They may respond by saying:
verily, sustenance is gotten by struggling and then having tawakkul on Allāh.
then it will be said to them that;
Likewise, salvation in the Hereafter is gotten by struggling hard to follow the commandments of Allāh and shunning away evil & its path, then asking Allāh for tawfīq.
Allāhu A’alam! Bārakallāhu fīkum!
