Assalamu Alaykum Warahmatullah Wabarakaatuh
Blessed morning to you all. We ask Allah to grant us the mercy of His Tawfiq and Sadaad, and the Bounties of His Light and Guidance, amin.
As we mentioned last week,
We shall be treating the Last Chapter of the illustrious book Safwatu Az-Zubad, a writing of the Shaafi’i Imaam and Faqih Ibn Raslaan Ar-Ramli rahimahullah
خاتمة في علم التصوف
He said:
“Conclusion: On the Science of Tasawwuf”
As for At-Tasawwuf then there has been different descriptions and definitions of it.
As-Subki in his Tabaqaat Ash-Shaafi’iyyah quoting Ibn As-Salaah mentioned that there is up to a thousand different meanings and interpretations that have been given to it. But it is mainly a science that deals with purifying the hearts from its blemishes and taking the servant close to his Lord.
The belief of most Ulamaa is that it deals with the third part of Islam that was asked by Jibril to the Rasul salallahu alayhi wasallam in the popular Hadith of Umar bn Al-Khattaab radiyallahu anhu when he asked about Al-Ihsaan.
Then know, O beloved One, that of Tasawwuf is what is Extreme and of it is what is Islam and Sunnah. So do not take what the people of Bid’a and the extreme Sufis of today do and say as Islam.
As most of them are in extreme positions and inclinations not in any way supported by the proofs of the Shariah in the Quran and the Hadith.
And because some of the Scholars of Sunnah want to avoid those pitfalls, they avoid this topic entirely.
Thus that which teaches Zuhd (Abstinence from Luxuries), Qanaa’a (Satisfaction with the Provisions from Allah) and which trains the heart to rid itself of its appetites and caprices is Sunnah and praiseworthy provided it is not extreme and beyond the Sunnah.
Ar-Ramli continued by saying:
“Whomsoever`s heart is Honored and Detests humiliation, would turn away from its lowly things”
من نفسه شريفة أبيه
يربأ عن أموره الدنيه
By it’s he means the Heart
Will shun the lowly things that the heart inclines to such as lowly love, lust, attachment to the Luxuries of this life, and the pitfalls of failure.
What this is saying is that whosoever has a strong and determined heart that is praiseworthy and honored
His heart is not on a high pedestal and a high standing, the one who turns his heart toward attachment to this Dunya. This is the first thing that anyone on a journey towards Allah needs to know. You cannot claim to be upon His Path and be chasing after the lowly things of this life. And the very temporal pleasures of this Dunya, pleasures that are only satisfying in seconds, at most few minutes.
Can’t you see that in the Hadith that was recorded by Imaam Abu ‘Isa At-Tirmidhi from Abu Hurayrah radiyallahu anhu the Rasul salallahu alayhi wasallam said:
الدنيا ملعونة ملعون ما فيها إلا ذكر الله وما والاه، أو عالم أو متعلم
“The Dunya is cursed, cursed also is everything in it save for the Remembrance of Allah and everything connected to it, or a Possessor of Knowledge or a Seeker of Knowledge”
And if the only problem with the Dunya is that it preoccupies us from the Remembrance of Allah, it would have sufficed it as evil.
Ar-Ramli here emphasizes the importance of having high determination for it is with high determination that we attain the heights of the Shar’iah.
Dear one, don’t be a weak mind, don’t be a weak soul, don’t be a weak heart, don’t be a person of weak and lame resolves, only with strong resolves and determination is rectitude and proximity to Allah is attained.
And in the Hadith, the Rasul salallahu alayhi wasallam said:
إن الله يحب معالي الأمور ويكره سفاسفها
“Indeed Allah loves the things of high resolve and determination and dislikes the lowly things”
The High resolve and determination matters are those matters that take someone to Allah because they require patience, steadfastness, focus and distance from the distractions of the Dunya no matter how distracting they are. Hadith was recorded by Al-Bayhaqi in the Shu’ub and At-Tabaraani in the Kabir and the Awsat.
The lowly matters are those that draw and invite towards the pleasures of this Dunya and distract away from the recompense of the Aakhirah and its life.
May Allah grant myself and you Tawfiq, amin.
Be a person of high resolve and determination today, and earn yourself the position of steadfastness on the Path of Allah.
Barakallahu fikum
Jazakumullahu Khayran
We shall stop for the week here
سبحانك اللهم وبحمدك اشهد ان لا اله الا الله أستغفرك وأتوب إليك
