Contentment and Covetousness

📬 DAILY POST#460

_Imām Ibn Qudāmah Al-Maqdisi -rahimahullāh-_
Said:

*CONTENTMENT AND COVETOUSNESS.*

Know verily – may the blessings of Allāh Ta’āla be upon you – that, for one to be poor is not something that is blameworthy in itself rather, the poor person is recommended to be contented with what Allāh Has bestowed upon him of His mercy, and he should not be greedy as regard what is in the hand of people nor being eager to get money by all means.

Thus, a poor person will not be able to attain this position except when he is patient, contented with the little he has be it food, shelter and the likes.

In this context, it is reported in Sahīhu Muslim from ‘Abdullāh Ibn ‘Amrū Ibn Al-‘As radiyallāhu anhu, that the Messenger of Allāh sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam said:

_ﻗَﺪْ ﺃَﻓْﻠَﺢَ ﻣَﻦْ ﺃَﺳْﻠَﻢَ ﻭَﺭُﺯِﻕَ ﻛَﻔَﺎﻓًﺎ ﻭَﻗَﻨَّﻌَﻪُ ﺍﻟﻠَّﻪُ ﺑِﻤَﺎ ﺁﺗَﺎﻩُ._

_”He Is successful who has accepted Islam, who has been provided with sufficient for his want and been made contented by Allah with what He has bestowed upon him.”_

Transmitted and recorded by Imām Muslim in his ‘Sahih’#1054.

And Suleiman Ibn Dāwud ‘alayhimassalam was reported to have said:

We have tasted life, its soft part is gotten from the intense part, and we found what is not up to it level to be sufficient.

Abū Hāzim said:

Whosoever possess three things has a balanced intellect: whosoever knows himself, and safeguards his tongue, and he is pleased and contented with what Allāh Azzawajal bestowed upon him.

In addition, some wise ones used to say:

You will always be honoured as long as you stick to contentment.

But in the case of covetousness, the Messenger sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam Has warned against it, and he said:

_أيها الناس، أجملوا في الطلب، فإنه ليس للعبد إلا ما كتب له._

_O people, do good in seeking, for a servant will not attain except that which has been ordained for him._

Transmitted by Al-Hākim(2/3) from the hadith of Jābir, and Ibn Mājah(2142) from the hadith of Abī Hamid As-sā’idī. And Shaykh Al-Albāni declared it as Sahih in ‘As-sahīhah'(898).

And lastly it was said:

Greediness used to humiliate an honorable person while contentment do uplift the status of a poor person.

Allāhu A’alam! Bārakallāhu fīkum!
