DAILY POST #35
Imaam Al-Haafidh Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalaani – rahimahullaah – said:
It is reported from An-Nawwaas bn Sam’aan – radiyallaahu anhu – who said: ‘I asked the Messenger of Allaah – salallaahu alayhi wasallam – about piety and sins then he said:
“Piety and Righteousness is encompassed in Good Character, and Sinning is that which discomforts your mind and you detest that people become aware of it.”

COMMENTARY:
The companions, out of their inquisitive, would always ask the Rasul – salallaahu alayhi wasallam – so that they may increase in the knowledge of their Din. An-Nawwaas wanted to know about Piety and Righteousness and also its opposite. That is because, knowing the opposite of something helps you in knowing that thing perfectly.
The Rasul – salallaahu alayhi wasallam – made it clear that Piety and Righteousness is encompassed in Good Character. This shows that Good Character is something a Muslim never lacks. A lacking of this means a loss of piety and righteousness.
But sinning never leaves a believer’s heart at rest because his conscience detests it and tells him what he has done is wrong.
