Imaam Ibn Hajar Al-‘Asqalaani – rahimahullaah – said:

It is reported from Abu Sirmah radiyallaahu anhu who said The Messenger of Allah -salallaahu alayhi wasallam said:

“Whoever causes harm to a Muslim will be harmed by Allah, and whosoever is harsh to a Muslim, then Allah be will harsh with him.”

Transmitted and recorded by Imaam Abu Dawud in his “Sunan”#3635 and Imaam At-Tirmidhi in his “Sunan” #1940. Imaam At-Tirmidhi graded it to be Hasan and Imaam Al Albani also declared it as Hasan in “Al Irwaa”#896.

The hadith shows the importance of the following:

1. It shows that it is disliked and abhorrent in Islam to harm others. And whoever causes harm to a Muslim, will be harmed by Allah. Allah says: “Do not deal with others unjustly, and you shall not be dealt with unjustly”. However, protecting Muslims from harm is a virtuous acts in Islam, such that it can be a means of great reward in the Hereafter. Even a simple act such as removing thorns from the road is a good deed.

It is reported from Abu Barza radiyallaahu anhu: I said, Oh Messenger of Allah salallaahu alayhi wasallam, teach me something that will benefit me. The Messenger of Allah salallaahu alayhi wasallam said: “َRemove harmful things from the roads of the Muslims.

” Transmitted by Imaam Muslim in his Sahih# 2618.

2. It indicates that it is disliked to be harsh on others unjustly. For if one is harsh on others unnecessarily, Allah will treat him in the same way that he treated other people and Allah will similarly punish him on the Day of Resurrection.

For this reason, one should be extremely careful from harming others. It is better one should be harmed or oppressed by others than for one to oppress others.

3. It shows how Islam condemns oppression, immorality, unfaithfulness and Selfishness.
