Imām Ibn Qudāmah Al-Maqdisi-rahimahullāh-
Said:
Deeds that are not built purely on Sincerity.
As for deeds that are mainly for showoff, then its doer may be punished just as the doer of a pure sincere act will be rewarded.
However, the Ulama upheld different opinions as to whether the one whose deeds are mixed up with seeking for reward, showoff and worldly gains deserved to be punished, rewarded or he is neither rewarded nor punished.
But what’s clear to us – Allāh knows best – that, the strength of the incentive should be considered. If the objectives of the Deen stand on an equal ground with the goal of the soul, then such a person is neither rewarded nor punished for it, but if the objectives for showoff is greater, then such a person will be held accountable for it, however, his punishment is lesser to the one whose deeds is purely for showoff.
And if the religion incentive is superior, then he shall be rewarded in proportion to it.
Allah Ta’āla says:
Surely Allah does not do injustice to the weight of an atom, and if it is a good deed He multiplies it and gives from Himself a great reward.
Sūratu An-Nisā, Verse 40.
These points we mentioned can also be buttressed with the ‘Ijmā’ of the Ummah on the point that whoever goes for Hajj and also having intention for trade will be rewarded for His Hajj since he is mainly moved by the Hajj not the trade.
Likewise, a mujāhid who seeks both fighting in the path of Allāh and Ghanīmah will be rewarded as long as he is initially moved by fighting in the path of Allāh Ta’āla.
However, these two set of individuals cannot be compared in reward with the one who performs Hajj or fights purely for the Sake of Allāh without any worldly gains attached to it.
Allāhu A’alām.
Bārakallāhu fīkum.
Jazākumullahu Khayran.
