Degrees of Qiyām-ul-Layl

📬 DAILY POST#257

Imaam Ibn Qudaamah Al-Maqdisi -rahimahullaah-
Said:

Degrees of Qiyam Al-Layl.

Observing Qiyam Al-Layl is of various degrees as follows:

1). Praying the whole night.

It has been reported that some of the salaf do pray the whole night.

2). Praying for half of the night.

The best way to attain this, is for one to sleep the first third and the last sixth of the night.

3). Praying for one-third of the night.

Here, one is recommended to sleep the first half and the last sixth of the night. And this is how Prophet Dawud alayhissalatu wassalam used to observe His Qiyam Al-Layl.

In this context, Abdullahi Ibn ‘Amr ibn Al- ‘As reported that the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu alayhi wasallam said:

*أحب الصلاة إلى الله صلاة داود، كان ينام نصف الليل، ويقوم ثلثه، وينام سدسه*”

Meaning:

“The most beloved prayer to Allah is that of Dawud. He used to sleep for half of the night and then pray for one third of the night and again sleep for its sixths part…. ”

Transmitted and recorded by Imaam Muslim in his ‘Sahih’#1159 and Imaam Al Bukhaari in his ‘Sahih’#3420.

4). Praying for one sixth of the night.

It is beloved to pray in the second half or the sixth of the night.

5).Praying with no estimation of time.

There are two ways of observing Qiyam Al-Layl in this method which as follows:

A. Praying from the beginning of the night until sleep overcomes him. Then he wakes up again to pray until sleep overcomes him, and so on.

B. Sleeping at the beginning of the night, and then getting up to pray for the remaining part of the night.

In this regard, sufyaanu Ath Thawri rahimahullahu said:

” I sleep at the beginning of the night, and then get up to observe Qiyam Al-Layl in the remaining part of the night.”

6). Praying four or two Rak’at in the night. It is reported from Abu Hurairah radiyallaahu anhu_who said_ The Messenger of Allah sallallaahu alayhi wasallam said:

*من استيقظ من الليل وأيقظ امرأته فصليا جميعا ركعتين كتبا ليلتئذ من الذاكرين الله كثير والذاكرات*
Meaning:

“Whosoever wakes up at night and let’s his wife to do so in order to offer two Rak’at, will be recorded amongst those who make much Dhikr of Allah in that night.”

Transmitted and recorded by Imaam Abu Dawud in his ‘Sunan’#1451. Shaykh Al Albaani declared it as Sahih.

7. Offering prayer in the time between Magrib and isha’ prayers, and observing the wird of the time of sahr.
