Imām Ibn Qudāmah -rahimahullāh- said:
Also know that, if the gratitude for wealth is expressed by not spending it on disobedience, rather it is used lawfully, then in this case, patience is better as against gratitude.
However, the poor patient person is better than a rich greedy person who spends the wealth lawfully; for the poor person has struggled against his soul and he has accepted what Allāh Has ordained for him with a bare chest.
Meanwhile, all what has been mentioned applies to where patience is given precedence over gratitude.
Also, it is cleared that each of these two statements has their specific explanation depending on the situation.
Therefore, a poor patient person may be better than a grateful wealthy person, and it is possible that a grateful wealthy person is better than a poor patient person.
This is the case of a wealthy person who sees himself like the poor person because he doesn’t withhold wealth for himself except based on necessity and he spends the remaining on good deeds, and those in needs.
And he doesn’t used the wealth to seek reputation nor praises from others.
Thus, in this case, the grateful wealthy person is better than the poor patient person.
