_Imām Ibn Qudāmah Al-Maqdisi -rahimahullāh-_
Said:
*ENVY.*
Know verily – may the blessings of Allāh be upon you – that, envy and grudges basically happens amongst age mates and friends, this is because of their same objectives.
Due to this, one sees that an Ā’lim of a certain field always envies another Ā’lim of equal field without envying an Ā’bid, and Ā’bid also envies the Ā’bid not the Ā’lim, and a merchantman envies his friend who is also a merchant.
Also, a shoe cobbler envies another shoe cobbler, and he doesn’t envy a draper except for another reason entirely, for the work of each one of them is different from the other.
Therefore, envy and enmity are found within people of similar goals and aims and who are closed to one another.
But for the people who are far and not close, envy hardly exist within them because there is no connection between them except for the one who have covetousness for status and position. Surely, he will envy everyone – far or near – who tries to catch up with him in his field so that they will not snatch away his temporary reputation and popularity.
However, the source of this bad character is as a result of love of dunya and its luxuries, for the love of the dunya compels people to compete, thus, envious act arises within them.
As for the Hereafter, there is no Compelling in it, for whosoever loves Allāh, Angels, and His prophets will never waste his time envying others on this worthless dunya. In this case, an Ā’lim Ar-rabbāni may opportune to know thousands of ulama of his field without envying them. Rather, he is happy with it and he considered such privilege as a blessings from Allāh.
And again, their main goal is to please Allāh alone not to attain any position in this dunya.
