_Imām Ibn Qudāmah Al-Maqdisi -rahimahullāh-_
Said:
Know verily – may the blessings of Allāh be upon you – that, people differ as to the way they behave regarding the blessings that Allāh bestowed upon their brothers; some may deslike such blessings and prefers the blessings to terminate and these people are regarded as an envious people. And others, may not dislike such blessings nor love its termination, but they love that Allāh bestow such blessings upon them too, and this act is regarded as a form of happiness in itself.
And know that, the soul in its nature, love high status and position, and thus, it doesn’t want others to outclass it in that regard, and if it is excelled by others, the soul find it difficult to bear and it dislikes it, and it loves the position of such people to terminate so that they can be of same level, and this is something that is in built in man’s nature.
Hence, the cure of envy is for one to be pleased with destiny and train oneself on Zuhd in this dunya. And at times, is for one to realize that all those bounties has to do with the pleasure of this dunya and Allāh will surely ask about the blessings He bestowed upon His servants.
Moreover, one should not put in practice what one’s heart is thinking of nor envying others nor speaking about it. If one does this, one will not be affected by what is in one’s nature.
However, whosoever envies a prophet for his prophethood, that such a prophet doesn’t deserves to be a prophet, such a person has no excuse, for no one will have such a thought except the person that his heart that is filled up with kuffr and misguidance. But if one loves to surpass his age mate and to discover what they have not come across in order to obtain high status in the side of Allāh and one doesn’t love to see the termination of what Allāh Has bestowed upon them of His blessings, in this case, one has done nothing wrong by that, for striving to attain a great position in the side of Allāh has been encouraged in the glorious Qur’an.
In this regard, Allāh says:
_و في ذلك فليتنافس المتنافسون._
_For this, let those who strive, strive for it._
*Suratu Al-Mutaffifīn, verse 26.*
In sahīhayn, from the hadith of Ibn Mash’ud radiyallāhu anhu, from the prophet sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam that he says:
_There is no envy except on two classes of people. The first is a person, whom Allah Has given wealth and he spends it righteously; the second is the one whom Allah Has given wisdom of the Holy Qur’an and he acts according to it and teaches it to others._
Transmitted and recorded by Imam Al-bukhāri in his ‘Sahih#73 and Imām Muslim in his ‘Sahih#815.
