_Imām Ibn Qudāmah -rahimahullāh-_
Said:
It will be said to him on the Day of Resurrection:
_اقْرَأْ كِتَابَكَ كَفَىٰ بِنَفْسِكَ الْيَوْمَ عَلَيْكَ حَسِيبًا_
_Read your book; your own self is sufficient this day as a reckoner against you._
*Suratu Al-Isrā, verse 14.*
He will respond by saying:
what a book is this, which doesn’t omit the small deeds nor great ones, but records them all?
It will be said to him:
Indeed, in dunya – which you were mesmerized with its pleasure and amusement and behaved arrogantly with his blessings – Two Angels were assigned to you so they can keep in record your words, actions be it the smallest and greatest ones, however, you were heedless of this acts and you have forgotten them as if those your actions never took place, but Allāh Ta’āla Has recorded them.
Thus, today, you shall account for your actions, and if not, you will be dragged to hell.
Therefore, if every person on earth will account for his deeds on the day of Resurrection, then being arrogant on earth has no benefit.
And if unfortunately, he was at last dragged to hell, then his situation on this great Day is worse than that of the animals, for the animals will be turned to sand, thus, they have nothing to face of accountability.
Hence, why should man behave arrogantly meanwhile he doesn’t know whether he will be forgiven for his a sins or he will be held responsible for them.
And who can guarantee himself security from punishment for the sins which he has committed?
In addition, his similitude is as though a man who has committed an offence against his king which he deserves to be punished by receiving hundred stroke of lashes. He was then detained in prison so that he can have his due punishment for his act. Therefore, do you think in this lowly situation of his in prison he will dare act arrogantly to those with him in the prison?
The dunya in itself is nothing but a prison. The sins committed by man in it deserves punishment except if he was forgiven and covered with the blessings of Allāh Ta’āla.
As for knowing the greatness of Allāh Ta’āla, it is enough for him to take a look deeply at the Mightiness of Allāh Ta’āla and the wonders of what He created. This is the treatment for uprooting arrogance from its root.
As for actions towards its treatment, is for him to humble himself to Allāh Ta’āla and His servants. And this is done by holding firm to the characters of the noble and humble ones, and we have already explained the manners of our beloved Rasūl sallallāhu a’layhi wasallam in this regard, and his humbleness and beautiful characters.
Allāhu A’alam! Bārakallāhu fīkum!
