Imaam Ibn Qudaamah Al-Maqdisi -rahimahullaah-
Said:
An explanation on the number of awrad of the Day and the Night.
Know verily that, awrad of the day is divided into seven and that of the Night is divided into six awrad.
Below is the explanation of these awrad and its virtues:
The first award of the Day: This begins with the beginning of the dawn(I.e the second one) until rise of the sun. This is an important time and Allah has made an oath with it . Allah says:
Meaning:
” And the Dawn as it breathes away the darkness.” At-Takwir:18.
Thus, when a murid( devout worshiper) awakes from sleep at this, he is recommended to say the Dhikr below:
Alhamdu lillaahil-lathee ‘ahyaanaa ba’da maa ‘amaatanaa wa’ilayhin-nushoor.
Meaning:
” ‘ Praise be to Allah. Who has caused us to live after He has caused us to die; and to Him is the final issuing. ”
Transmitted and recorded by Imaam Bukhaari in his ‘Sahih’#6312 and Imaam Muslim in his ‘Sahih’#2711.
It is also reported from Ibn Masu’d radiyallaahu anhu who said that when it is morning, The Messenger of Allah sallallaahu alayhi wasallam used to supplicate by saying:
‘Asbahnaa wa ‘asbahal-mulku lillaahi walhamdu lillaahi, laa ‘ilaaha ‘illallaahu wahdahu laa shareeka lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa Huwa ‘alaa kulli shay’in Qadeer. Rabbi ‘as’aluka khayra maa fee haathal-yawmi wa khayra maa ba’dahu wa ‘a’oothu bika min sharri maa fee haathal-yawmi wa sharri maa ba’dahu, Rabbi ‘a’oothu bika, wa soo’il-kibari, Rabbi ‘a’oothu bika min ‘athaabin fin-naari wa ‘athaabin fil-qabri.”
Meaning:
” We have entered the morning and with it all dominion is Allah’s. Praise is to Allah. None has the right to be worshiped but Allah alone, Who has no partner. To Allah belongs the dominion, and to Him is the praise and He is Able to do all things. My Lord, I ask You for the goodness of this day and of the days that come after it, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this day and of the days that come after it. My Lord, I seek refuge in You from laziness and helpless old age. My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell-fire, and from the punishment of the grave.”
Transmitted and recorded by Imaam Muslim in his ‘Sahih’#2723.
