_Imām Ibn Qudāmah Al-Maqdisi -rahimahullāh-_
Said:
*GOSSIPING.*
Know verily that, the prophet(ﷺ) said regarding gossiping in a hadith narrated by Huzaifah radiyallāhu anhu:
_ﻻَ ﻳَﺪْﺧُﻞُ ﺍﻟْﺠَﻨَّﺔَ ﻗَﺘَّﺎﺕٌ._
_A Qattat(gossiper) will not enter Paradise._”
Transmitted by Imām Al-Bukhārī#6056.
Gossiping involves reporting the statement said by a backbiter to the person he slandered. It also encompasses talking about things that are disliked by the sharia be it action or statement.
Hence, whenever one sees a gossiper tattling, one is highly encouraged to do the following:
1. One should not believe the information nor testify to it. For a gossiper is a fāsiq and his testification is rejected.
2. One should warn the person against gossiping and one should also give him a sincere advice.
*3.* One should hate him for the sake of Allāh due to bad character.
*4.* One should not think bad about one’s brother which the person is gossiping.
*5.* One should not spy on one’s brother because of what one heard about him.
In this context, Allāh says:
_وَلَا تَجَسَّسُوا وَلَا يَغْتَب بَّعْضُكُم بَعْضًا…_
Do not spy nor let some of you backbite others.
*Suratu Al-Hujurāt, verse 12.*
*6.* One should not gossip others.
lastly, it has been reported that Sulayman Ibn ‘Abdul-Malik said to a man:
_It has reached me that you said so so thing about me and defamed my honor. The man then said: I didn’t say it. Sulayman said: verily the person that informed me of your act is a trustworthy person. The man said: A gossiper can never be a trustworthy person, Sulayman said: You have indeed said the truth, you are free to go._
Yahya Ibn Abī Kathīr said:
_يفسد النمام في ساعة ما لا يفسد الساحر في شهر._
_A gossiper destroys in a hour what a sorcerer cannot destroy in a month._
