Imām Ibn Qudāmah -rahimahullāh- said:
Gratitude is not attained except by knowing that which Allāh Loves.
Know verily that, expressing gratitude cannot be fulfilled except by knowing that which Allāh Ta’āla loves, for the real meaning of gratitude is to utilize the blessings of Allāh in what He commands, and to be ungrateful is the opposite of this, either by not utilizing the blessings in the best way, or by using it in what Allāh dislikes.
Hence, there are two major ways to differentiate that which Allāh loves from that which He hates or dislikes:
1. Listening, and its source are the verses of the Holy Qur’an.
2. The insight of the heart, which is the looking with an insightful eyes, and this is quite difficult and great.
For this reason, Allāh sent down the Rusul, and made their ways to the people easy, and knowing these are upon knowing all the Ahkām of the Sharī’a in the deeds of the servants, and whoever lacks knowledge of the Ahkām of the Sharī’a in his deeds, will not be able to express gratitude in its fullest meaning.
And as for looking with insightful eyes, then its for one to know the Hikmah of Allāh Ta’āla in what He created; since Allāh Has never created a thing in this universe except there is a Hikmah behind it, and under each hikmah there is goal, and the goal is what is beloved. And such Hikmah is subdivided into that which is apparent and that which is hidden.
Allāhu A’alam! Bārakallāhu fīkum!
