THE VIRTUES OF MEMORIZING THE QUR’AN

HALQAH SESSION: EPISODE 3

Assalaamu alaykum warahmatullaah wabarakaatuh

You are welcome to this session of ours,
We ask Allaah to bless and direct us through it, aameenAs we promised, our topic today is on the topic: THE VIRTUES OF MEMORIZING THE QUR’AN

But before we proceed, we want to say a word about the incidents that happened during this 10days of DhulHijjah. The incidents of the Hajj: the falling of the crane and the stampede that occured at Mina during the Ram’y (stoning) of the jamaraat.

It has come in the Hadith that was both recorded by Imaam Muslim and Imaam Bukhaari rahimahumallaah  that the Rasul – salallaahu alayhi wasallaam – inferred that the one who passes away while at Hajj will be raised on the Day of Qiyaamah while he is making the talbiyya

Also, there is the Hadith that refers that those who pass away while making the Hajj will have their rewards in continual accruement till the Day of Qiyaamah.

Many of the Ulamaa have explained that the one who passes away in the Hajj is a Shaheed, Imaam Muwaffaquddin Ibn Qudaamah Al-Maqdisi – rahimahullaah – mentioned that in Al-Mughni

They are sad incidents, we ask Allah to accept their deeds, to forgive them, to be merciful to them, to accept them, to grant them al-Firdaws, and to give their families the fortitude to bear the loss, aameen
But we want to mention a word of caution to us all that the publishing and propagating of the exposed corpse of a Muslim is a thing majority of the Ulamaa have spoken against. That Is because the corpse is an awrah, as Imaam Ash-Shaafi’i – rahimahullaah – referred It should not be published and propagated across the world as some people are doing unless if they have been covered, as a honour for them because the Muslim is honoured by Allah. So, let us caution those who are doing that at the moment, I am sure nobody will like to see his family member’s corpse littering the street that way.

May Allaah accept them and grant us steadfastness in the Din.

To proceed with our topic for the day, we begin by saying:

Describing the virtues of memorizing the Qur’an is a difficult thing to do, and that’s because it cannot be over-emphasized.Neither can it be given all its rights.
It has come in the Hadith:

إن القرآن سيأتي يوم القيامة شفيعا لأهله

“Indeed the Qur’an shall come on the Day of Qiyaamaah as an intercessor for its people”
Recorded by Imaam Al-Bukhaari

Who are then the people of the Qur’an?
Ulamaa have explained that the people of the Qur’an are those that:
Recite and practice it day and night. This is the explanation of Imaam An-Nawawi – rahimahullaah.

Ash-Shaatibi – rahimahullaah – says it is the People who memorize the Qur’an and work in its accordance

We ask Allah to make us among them Aameen.

Al-Imaam Al-Haafidh As-Sakhaawi – rahimahullaah – said:

وبعد فالقرآن نور مشرق * حامله مسدد موفقا

وجاء عن سيدنا محمد * ذي الفضل والفخر الرسول المرشد

في فضل حافظ القرآن المهرة * أنهم مع الكرام البررة

في فضل حافظ القرآن المهرة * أنهم مع الكرام السفرة

لأنه في صحف مطهرة * وهو بأيدهم كما قد ذكره

فالحافظ المتقن قد ساوي الملك * فاستعمل الجد فمن جد ملك))

He says:

“And thereafter, the Qur’an is indeed the illuminating light; its bearer is upon right and guided straight
It has been reported from our Master Muhammad; the possessor of virtues and honour, the Guiding Prophet
Regarding the virtues of the thorough Huffaadh of the Qur’an; that they will be with the Pure Angels.

For the fact that it (the Qur’an) is in the Suhufun Mutahhaarah; and it (the Qur’an) is their (Angels) hands as He (Allah) mentioned

Therefore, the thorough Haafidh (Memorizer) of the Qur’an is equated here with the Angel; So, exert unrelenting efforts (in its pursuit) for he who exerts efforts will surely earn (his goal)”

(Ref: Hidaayatu Al-Murtaab)

We notice that in this statement, Imaam As-Sakhaawi – rahimahullaah – referred to the ‘Haafidhun Mutqinun’, thats the ‘Thorough Memorizer’

What Imaam As-Sakhaawi said here is also the view of majority of the Ulamaa: that the one who will earn the magnified rewards referred to in the ahaadith that discuss the bounties of the memorizer is the one with a thorough memorization
and not the one whose hifdh is wobbling and who is struggling hard to keep a fraction of the Qur’an

We ask Aallah to make us of the thorough memorizers, aameen
Therefore, we must struggle hard and hard to make sure we not only memorize, but to make it thorough.

Imaam As-Sakhaawi there referred to the Hadith that the one who memorize the Qur’an will be together with the Angels.

The Muhaddithun (Ulamaa of Hadith) have said that, though the Hadith is weak, there are other supporting evidences to that effect
Reflect on the last statement he (as-salhaawi ) mentioned there:

“He who exerts efforts shall surely earn (his goal)”

Thats how we should look at it. We ask Allah not to deny us the bounty of been among the memorizers of the Qur’an, aameen.

In turn, the Imaam Abu Al-Hasan bn Barry – rahimahullaah – said:

وبعد فاعلم أن علم القرآن * أجمل ما به تحلي الإنسان

وخير ما علمه وعلمه * واستعمل الفكر له وفهمه

وجاء في الحديث أن المهرة * في علمه مع الكرام السفرة
وجاء عن نبينا الأواه * حملة القرآن أهل الله

لأنه كلامه المرفع * وجاء فيه شافع مشفع

وقد أتت في فضله آثار * ليست تفي بحمله أسفارا

He says:

“Thereafter, know that the Knowledge of the Qur’an; is the most beautiful of what man can beautify himself with

“And its the best of what he (man) ever knew or taught; or used his intellect for, or understood

“It has come in the Hadith that the experts; In the knowledge of it (the Qur’an) are with the Honoured Angels

“And it has been recorded from our
Magnificent Prophet; that the Bearers of the Qur’an are the People of Allah

“Because it (the Qur’an) is His elevated Word; and in it has come what suffices and what heals

“And numerous reports have been recorded about its virtues; which does not leave off any efforts in exerting efforts”
(Ref: Ad-Durar Al-Lawaami’)

Here we see that the Imaam refers to the fact that studying and teaching the Qur’an is the best thing a person can ever do
It has come in the Hadith, the Rasul – salallaahu alayhi wasallam – said:

خيركم من تعلم القرآن وعلمه

“The best of you is he who studies the Qur’an and then teaches it.”
The Ulamaa of Islam are at a consensus that there is nothing more beneficial for the student of knowledge like memorizing the Qur’an

There are other virtues of memorizing the Qur’an, among them:

1. In the Hadith transmitted by At-Tirmidhi, the Rasul – salallaahu alahi wasallam – said.

“It will be said to the Reciter of the Qur’an on the Day of Qiyaamah: ‘Recite and ascend the same way you used to recite while you were in the Dunya, for your residence in at the last aayah you recite”

The Qurraa’ (reciters) are the Memorizers of the Qur’an, as in the time of the Rasul – salallaahu alayhi wasallam – the Companions used to memorize alongside recitation and studying at the same time

2. In another Hadith, the Rasul – salallaahu alayhi wasallam – said:
“The parents of the one who memorized the Qur’an will have on the Day of Qiyaamah the crowns of light and gold placed on their heads as a honour”
If this is the reward of the parents of the memorizer, what will be said about the memorizer himself?
Why this great reward for the parents?
Because they are firstly the source of his existence, secondly because they most likely had contributions in his growth and ability to memorize, thirdly because they are his parents.
The virtues are just too numerous to count

3. The Ulamaa are at an agreement that memorizing the Qur’an sharpens the intellect. The people who have experienced it knows this too. That’s because the Qur’an is a Nuur, and this Nuur possesses the heart, the brain, the intellect, and the entire being of the one who memorizes it. We ask Allah to make us of them

5. It cleanses the sins and distance away the Shaytaan. This is also agreed upon among our Ulamaa.

6. Imaam Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyya – rahimahullaah – mentions this in his “Ighaathatu Al-Lahafaan”
We are yet to discuss the methodologies we can use – in these modern days – to memorize the Qur’an but our time is almost up
Alhamdulillaah,

Therefore we will pause here to take questions and observations inshaa Allah
Are there any?

I have a question about the hadith:
Please go ahead

ًsome people do used this to discourage people from memorizing the Qur’an so that they will be punished in the of qiyamah, please i want malam to explain the hadith to us whether it is authentic or not., barakaAllahu feekum

Assalaamu alaykum @KhadeejahOlu, may Allah reward you for your efforts and concerns
We thank you for putting your confidence and trust in this platform and in its organizers, baarakallaahu feekum
Our initiative on this platform is to help ourselves with knowledge as best as we can, especially putting in mind the inability of many of us to find scholars to learn from
Therefore, studying through this means could help but you should still try to study directly from a teacher as best as you can, especially when the Qur’an is concerned. Baarakallaahu feekum

Assalama alaykum @as, baarakallaahu feekum for your question!

Aameen wa antum fajazakumullah khairan

This is really a matter that many people have used to dissuade themselves from the Shaytaan. As far as the Hadith is concerned, among the Ulamaa are those that consider it Sahih, of them are those that consider it Hasan bi al-majmu’, and those that consider it weak.

An-Nawawi – rahimahullaah – sees it as Hasan but some of the Muhadditheen and and Muhaqqiqin consider it weak.

Anyway, on the basis of its authenticity if it is, it has not been interpreted by the Ulamaa as that.
The author of ‘Ibraazu al-ma’aani sharh hirzi al-amaani’ categorically mentions that most scholars interpret it as abandoning practicing it and they refer to the verse in Suratu al-Hashr:

ولا تكونوا كالذين نسوا الله فأنساهم أنفسهم

And do not be like those who forgot Allah then Allah make them to forget themselves”

Therefore, its a game of Iblis to convince people in the opposite by having them abandon memorization in view of this hadith.
Allaahu A’alam

InshaaAllaah we will be closing for tonight.

Subhanakallahumma wa bi hamdik ash adu an La ilaha illa anta astagfurka wa atuubu ilaik
Jazaakumullaahu khayran
