Imām Ibn Qudāmah Al-Maqdisi-rahimahullāh-
Said:
Intention, Sincerity, and Truthfulness.
Know that, one cannot be successful except with knowledge and sticking to Ibādāt with sincerity and Truthfulness.
Thus, actions without intention is a waste of effort, intention without sincerity is a form of showoff, and sincerity without Truthfulness is as though a floating dust.
Allāh Ta’āla says:
وَقَدِمْنَا إِلَىٰ مَا عَمِلُوا مِنْ عَمَلٍ فَجَعَلْنَاهُ هَبَاءً مَّنثُورًا
And We will proceed to what they have done of deeds, so We shall render them as scattered floating dust.
Sūratu Al-Furqān, Verse 23.
One wonders how can the intention of a servant who doesn’t know the essence of intention be valid? Or how can he be sincere the one who doesn’t know the essence of sincerity? Or how can he be truthful in his pursue of sincerity the one who lacks it true meaning?
Therefore, what is first wājib upon every servant who want to follow the path of Allāh is to know the meaning of intention, then it should be censored with deeds after understanding the essence of Truthfulness and sincerity, for they are both required for the salvation of a servant.
