*THE FIRST CHARPTER*
باب الأدب
“The Chapter on Comportment”
This Chapter deals with the Way a person us supposed to carry himself
Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah – rahimahullāh – said:
فالأدب: اجتماعُ خصال الخير في العبد، ومنه المأدبة، وهي الطعام الذي يجتمع عليه الناس
“What is meant by Adab is the combination of the Excellent Traits in a Servant. And from this comes the word Al-Mu’addabah which is the food around which gathers to eat every person.”
This he mentioned in his excellent book Madāriju As-Sālikīn
The Ulamā throughout our history have put together certain codes of Ethics which they canonized in what is known as Ādāb
And know, O honored One, that Ādāb can be divided into two categories.
The first is what is Adabun Ma’a Allāh which is the Code of Ethics and Comportment with which a person should carry himself before Allāh. Ibn Taymiyyah – rahimahullāh – said: Nowadays when people speak about Ādāb, they restrict it to Ādāb between men and forget that Ādāb toward Allāh is the most Important.
The Ulamā of the past would teach their Children the importance of Ādāb toward Allāh as the first thing a Child learns
Adab toward Allāh entails been sincere to Him, singling Him put in Ibādah To show this, they would pay attention to their dressing in Salāt
Not raising one’s voice over His injunctions
Not going against Allāh’s injunctions
Magnifying His Praise and His Glory
He said: rahimahumullāh: “One of the Salaf possessed a very beautiful and expensive Garment which he wore only upon Salāt. He would say: my Lord is the most deserving of my beautifying myself, that I do upon my Salāt”
The Second is Adabun Ma’a An-Nās
Which is the Manner with which a person should carry himself with respect to others
The Second which is Ādāb toward other men, it is that about which Imām Ibn Hajar discussed in this Chapter:
عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: حق المسلم على المسلم ستّ
إذا لقيته فسلِّم عليه، وإذا دعاك فأجبه، وإذا استنصحك فانصحه، وإذا عطس فحمد الله فشمته، وإذا مرض فعده، وإذا مات فاتبعه
From Abū Hurayrah – radiyallāhu ‘anhu – the Messenger of Allāh – salallāhu alayhi wasallam – said:
رواه مسلم
“The Right of a Muslim on a Muslim are Six:
“If you meet him you say the Salām unto him”
“If he invites you, you should respond”
“If he seeks your advice concerning a matter, give him sincere advice”
“If he sneezes and says ‘Alhamdulillāh’, then say to him the tashmīt”
“If he falls sick, pay him visit’
“If he dies, escort his body (to the grave)”
This Hadīth is recorded by Imām Muslim in his Sahīh
We shall pause here to expound on these six matters tomorrow Allāh willing
May Allāh accept our fast and grant us His forgiveness, mercy, emancipation from the fire of hell, and an admittance into the Company of the Righteous
Bārakallāhu fīkum
