Assalāmu Alaykum Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh
Alhamdulillāh Awwalan Wa Ākhiran
Seeking Allāh’s refuge from the evil of my own self I say:
فلما قسى قلبي وضاقت مذاهبي جعلت رجائي نحو عفوك سلما
تعاظمني ذنبي فلما قرنته بعفوك ربي كان عفوك أعظما
فما زلت ذا عفو عن الذنب لم تزل تجود وتعفو منة وتكرما
May Allāh forgive us our sins
Honored brothers and sisters you are welcome to this day’s session of the Shar’h
The Imām said:
*The Sixth Hadīth*
وعن ابن عباس قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: إذا أكل أحدكم طعاما فلا يمسح يده حتى يلعقها أو يلعقها. متفق عليه
From Ibn ‘Abbās who said: the Messenger of Allāh – salallāhu alayhi wasallam – said:
“Whenever any of you has eaten food, let him not clean his hand until he has licked it, or had it licked.”
(Bukhārī and Muslim) Agreed Upon (its authenticity)
As for Ibn Abbās, he was the son of the uncle of the Messenger of Allāh – salallāhu alayhi wasallam – and was born three years before the Hijrah
He was so brilliant in his young age that the Companions regarded him as a great Companion despite his young age
His aunt Maimūnah was also a wife of the Rasūl – salallāhu alayhi wasallam
He was therefore very close to the Rasūl – salallāhu alayhi wasallam
He was of the youths for whom the Rasūl – salallāhu alayhi wasallam – prayed for immensely
And in the days of ‘Umar bin Al-Khattāb, he would make special recognition for Ibn Abbas and use of his counsel
He once said about him: “That boy is a wise matured young man, possessed of an eloquent tongue and a very intelligent heart”
He was so much a great Imām, Faqīh and Mufassir of the Qur’ān that the illustrious Companion Ibn Mas’ud said about him: “What an excellent Commentator of the Qur’ān is indeed Ibn ‘Abbas. If he were to attain our ages, then none of us would have been peers with him”
He was not only a Commentator, he was also a Faqīh and Linguist and ‘Atā said: “I have indeed not seen any gathering that is more honorable in Fiqh, and more Conciousness inspiring than the gathering of Ibn ‘Abbās. The people and students of Fiqh are gathered at his feet. Same goes with the People of Qur’ān and the People of Arabic Poetry. He gives each of them enough immense knowledge from a wide valley (of Knowledge)”
The Rasūl – salallāhu alayhi wasallam – passed away while he was thirteen years of age. And once prayed for him saying
Imām Al-Bukhāri recorded in the Sahīh that once the Rasūl – salallāhu alayhi wasallam – drew him and embraced him and said:
اللهم فقه في الدين
اللهم علمه الكتاب
اللهم علمه الحكمة
“O Allāh grant him a thorough understanding of the Dīn”
“O Allāh teach him the Book”
“O Allāh teach him Wisdom”
He was indeed a great Imām and passed away in the city of Tā’if in the year 68 years after the Hijrah at the age of 72 years. May Allāh be pleased with him, āmīn
In this Hadīth, the Rasūl – salallāhu alayhi wasallam – commanded us to lick our hands after eating
There are many benefits in this Hadīth
1. That which is prescribed is that a person licks his hands after eating
2. That it is recommended to clean the hands with water/handkerchief or anything customary after licking it.
3. That if a person is feeding a child or eating together, he should make the child lick his hand as is found in the Hadīth. This is Sunnah as is clear in the Hadīth
4. The same above applies to a wife licking her husband’s hand after eating together, and vice versa
Hasten o beloved one to implement this important Prophetic Sunnah and don’t be of those that consider this uncivilized or shameful.
This is Sunnah. While there is no sin in its leaving, it been considered as shameful or unimportant is a sin that can take one out of the fold of Islām
Bārakallāhu fīkum
We ask Allāh to accept our fast and to show mercy to us, āmīn
Jazākumullāhu Khayran
