Imām Ibn Qudāmah -rahimahullāh- said:
Manners of Patience.
Know verily that, amongst the most important Ādāb of patience is to stick to it the first stroke of a calamity; for the Rasūl sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam was reported to have said:
Surely, patience is at the first stroke of a calamity.
Transmitted by Imām Al-Bukhārī#1302.
Also, amongst the Ādāb of patience, is for one to return to Allāh immediately after the incidence; this is in accordance to the Hadīth of Ummu Salamah radiyallāhu anha from the riwāyah of Imām Muslim in which the Rasūl salallāhu a’layhi wasallam was reported to have said:
_If any Muslim who suffers some calamity says, what Allāh has commanded him,” We belong to Allāh and to Him shall we return; O Allah, reward me for my affliction and give me something better than it in exchange for it,” Allah will give him something better than it in exchange._
Reported by Imām Muslim#918.
And amongst the Ādāb, is for one to keep silent, as for shedding tears, then it is permissible as long as is not out of context.
Some wise ones were reported to have said:
_Sorrow doesn’t bring back what has been lost, rather, it pleases the malicious one._
The calamity should not be noticed in one’s behavior as did by Umm Salim the wife of Abī Talhah when her child passed away, and the Hadīth is well known in the _Sahīhu Muslim_
And Thābit Al-banānī was reported to have said:
_When ‘Abdullāh Ibn Mutraf died, his father( Mutraf) came out in good wears and he applied perfumes, the people were sad due to that and they said: Your child ‘Abdullāh passed away but you still came out in this good clothes of yours while applying perfumes?! Mutraf replied by saying: should I fall into sorrow due to it? My Lord promised me three good things, each of these things is beloved to me than Dunya and what it contains._
Allāh Ta’āla says:
_Who, when a misfortune befalls them, say: Surely we are Allah’s and to Him we shall surely return._
_Those are they on whom are blessings and mercy from their Lord, and those are the followers of the right course._
Sūratu Al-Baqarah, Verse 156-157.
And Mutraf also said:
_I wish to give everything given to me in this world in order to have its reward in the Hereafter even it is as though a cup of water._
Allāhu A’alam! Bārakallāhu fīkum!
