Miserliness and Covetousness for Wealth

📬 DAILY POST#454

_Imām Ibn Qudāmah Al-Maqdisi -rahimahullāh-_
Said:

*MISERLINESS AND COVETOUSNESS FOR WEALTH.*

Know verily – may the blessings of Allāh Taā’la be upon you – that, wealth is not blameworthy in itself but it depends on what is being used for. If it is gathered for praise, arrogance, pride and show off, and not a path to earn the pleasure of Allah, then in this case, the wealth is now a fitna and temptation for one.

In this regard, Allāh Taā’la says:

_إنما أموالكم وأولادكم فتنة_

_Verily, your wealth and children are only a temptation._

*Suratu At-taghabun, verse 15.*

In the sunan At-tirmidhi, it was reported that the prophet sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam said:

_”ماذئبان جائعان أرسلا في غنم، بأفسد لها من حرص المرء على المال والشرف لدينه.”_

_”Two hungry wolves sent in the midst of a flock of sheep are no more destructive to them than a man’s greed for wealth and fame is to his Deen”._

Transmitted by Imām At-tirmdhi(7/46). Shaykh Al-Albāni declared it as Sahih in ‘Sahīhu Al-Jāmi”.(5620).

Moreover, the passed salaf used to fear for themselves the temptations of wealth and its fitna.

In this context, it was narrated that any time ‘Umar radiyallāhu anhu got some conquests, he used to cry over it and say:

Allāh never withhold these conquests from His beloved Messenger sallallāhu and Abubarkr radiyallāhu anhu because He doesn’t want good for them but He preferred it for ‘Umar.

Yahya Ibn Mua’dh said:

Wealth is as though a scorpion, if you don’t have an amulet to safeguard yourself from it, then don’t suit it, for if it sting you, its poison will definitely kill you.

It was then said to him: what is it’s amulet? He said: taking it from the right source and putting in the appropriate place.

And he also said: two different calamities used to befall a servant on his death due to his wealth and no man has ever heard about such two calamities.

It was said to him: what are those two calamities?

He said: All his wealth shall be taken from him and he shall be asked about it after his death.

*23th Sha’bān,1438H.*

Allāhu A’alam! Bārakallāhu fīkum!
