_Imām Ibn Qudāmah Al-Maqdisi -rahimahullāh-_
Said:
*OBTAINMENT OF BACKBITING THROUGH SUSPICION.*
Know verily – may the blessing of Allāh Ta’āla be upon you – that, it is possible for one to backbite Muslims with one’s heart through suspicion or uncertainty.
Suspicion is the worst of false tales which the heart reclines to and follows if not properly monitored.
Thus, one should not think bad of one’s brother except with clear evidences and that may be through his bad characters or his way of life.
In addition, whenever an honest person informs one about the bad character of a another person, one should hasten to correct him and warn him against backbiting.
However, one should not belie him, for the information may be true or not. Therefore, one should make one’s investigation regarding it because it may be due to hatred and envy that leads to such allegations.
But if at times, one happens to have bad thought of his fellow Muslim without any tangible reason, one should put those Muslims in prayers, for by so doing, one blocks the ways of shaitan and angers him.
And whenever a Muslim stumbles or make a mistake, one should correct him in secret with soft tone and gentleness.
Moreover, one should know that, amongst the fruits of suspicion is spying on Muslims, for the heart that engages in suspicion doesn’t feel satisfied except with spying in order to confirm what it is thinking about of bad thought. But, spying is forbidden because one is just trying to intrude into the secret of a Muslim.
By so doing, one may not feel comfortable due to what one may observe. Whereas, if one is not aware of it in the first place, one will rejoice with his Muslim brother.
