On the authority of Abdullah Ibn ‘Umar -radiyaAllahu anhu- who said;
‘The prophet -sallallaahu alayhi wasallam- enjoined the payment of one Saa’ of dates or one Saa’ of barley as Zakat-ul-fitr on every Muslim slave or free, male or female, young or old, and he ordered that it be given before the people come out to offer the ‘Eid prayer.’
[Sahih al-Bukhari]
LESSONS FROM THE HADITH
1. Zakat-ul-Fitr is incumbent on every free Muslim who posses one sa’a (four mudd nabi) of date or barley which is not needed as basic food for himself and his family for the duration of one day and night. Available grains can also be used.
2. Every free Muslim must pay it for himself, his wife, his children, those under him and his slaves.
3. It has to be given before going out for salat-ul-Eid, starting from the dawn of the day of Eid, although it can also be given a day or two before eid as authentically reported by ibn Umar-radiyaAllahu anhu.
4. Zakat-ul-Fitr acts as compensation for a believers shortcomings in Ramadan and creates love and happiness in he Ummah especially on the day of Eid.
5. Zakat is a means of purification for a believers wealth.
May Allah accept our Ramadan and put baraka in everything He has given us, Aameen.
