بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
(On paying a missed fast on behalf of the dead)
عن عائشة رضي الله عنها أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال : من مات وعليه صيام صام عنه وليّه .
متفق عليه.
On the authority of Aaisha – radiyaAllahu anha- who said that the messenger of Allah -sallallaahu alayhi wasallam said: ‘Whoever dies owing a fast, his guardian should fast on his behalf.
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
LESSONS FROM THE HADITH
1. If a person dies before completing the fast they have missed during Ramadan or a fast he vowed to complete , then his guardian or one of his heirs must fast on his behalf.
2. If the deceased was of those originally exempted from fasting due to a long time obstacle (like prolong illness, old age) and his required to feed a person for everyday they have missed but dies before feeding in place of everyday they have missed, then it becomes compulsory on his guardian to feed a poor person on his behalf in place of those days.
3. There is no fasting or feeding on in place of the day missed on behalf a person who is exempted from fasting due to short time obstacle then dies before overcoming the obstacle. (like a traveler who passes away in his journey in Ramadan or a temporary I’ll person who dies in Ramadan)
