Recommended Path for a Preacher to Thread in Preaching

Imām Ibn Qudāmah -rahimahullāh- said:

However, if it is said: what’s the path that’s recommended for a preacher to tread in preaching to others?

Answer: It is really a wide scope of journey, however we shall point to some beneficial method in this regard, and they are four broad methods:

1). To mention the verses in the Holy Qur’an that warn sinners against evils and to mention what has been narrated from the Ahādīth and the Āthar, and this should be combined with praising the Tā’ibīn.

2). The Qisas of the Prophets ‘Alayhimmusalam, and the Salaf As-sālih, and what befell their people of catastrophies due to their sins, like what happened to Ādam ‘Alayhissalam, and what occurred to him for his sins by being sent out from Jannah, and what happened to Dāwud, Suleimān, and Yūsuf ‘Alayhimmusalam , and these Qisas where only narrated in order to be taken as a lesson and admonition, and these serve as a cure for the successful ones while the most unfortunate ones persist in their sins without being patient to cure them.

However, since the punishment of the Hereafter is more painful, then it is beloved that these Qisas should be repeated always on the hearings of those who persist in committing sins, and this is highly important in pushing them to seek for repentance.

3). To let them realise that hastening punishment in this dunya is highly possible, and whatever befalls a servant of difficulties and pains are due to his sins and errors, for some servants may neglect the punishment of the Hereafter while they are scared of the punishment of Allāh in this Dunya due to their ignorance.

In this context, Al-Fudayl Ibn ‘Iyād was reported to have said:

_Whenever I commit a sin, I do notice that in the behavior of my Donkey and my slave._

And Abū Suleimān Ad-dārānī said:

_Wet dream is a punishment in itself, for nobody will miss salah except due to one or two sins he/she committed._

It is reported from Abū Hurairah Radiyallāhu anhu who said: The Rasūl Sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam said:

_When a believer commits a sin, a black spot forms on his heart, if he repents and rectifies his ways and seeks forgiveness, the spot is purged from his heart. But if he goes on sinning, the spot will grow until it covers his heart all over. That’s rust, which Allāh mentions in His glorious Book, ( By no means! But on their hearts is the stain of their acts which they do) Al- Mutaffifīn: 14.)_

Al Hasan Rahimahullāhu said:

_The good deed is a light in the heart, and a means of power in the body, while bad deed is a darkness in the heart and a source weakness in the body._

4). Mentioning that which has been narrated regarding some major sins, like drinking of alcohol, committing Zina, Murder, arrogance, envy, and backbiting.

Allāhu A’alam! Bārakallāhu fīkum!
