Remembering Death and What Comes After It

📬 DAILY POST#690

Imām Ibn Qudāmah Al-Maqdisi-rahimahullāh-
Said:

Remembering Death and what Comes after it.

Know verily, whoever is completely preoccupied with the worldly matters finds it difficult to remember death. Even if he remembers it, he dislikes and runs away from it.

In this regard, people are of three major categories: an indulgent, a repentant, or the conscious person.

The indulgent person never thinks of death. If he remembers it, he does so due to his poor condition of his worldly affairs. This type of remembrance never brings its doer closer to Allāh.

As for the repentant, he thinks about death to install fear and piety in his heart, thus, his repentance is complete. He may hate death lest he should be overtaken by it before complete repentance.

In that way, his excused is valid, and he doesn’t fall under the Hadīth of the Rasūl Salallāhu alayhi wasallam where He said:

من كره لقاء الله كره الله لقاءه.

He who hates the meeting with Allāh, Allāh hates the meeting with him too.

Transmitted by Imām Al-Bukhārī#6507, and Imām Muslim#2683.

He fears meeting Allāh Ta’āla at the spot due to his shortcomings and negligence. And the sign for his sincerity in this regard is by his constant preparation and awareness. Otherwise, he is considered an indulgent person.

As for the conscious person, he always remembers death since it is the appointment time for meeting the beloved One and He never forgets this.

Thus, the repentant one is excused for his dislike of death, while the conscious person is also excused for his love for death.

However, the highest level is for a servant to submit his affairs completely to Allāh. Thus, he doesn’t choose death nor life. Rather, he prefers what Allāh loves, for he has given up all things to Allāh.

Lastly, know that, In the remembrance of death, there is reward and virtue, for the indulgent person may shun away the luxuries of this transitory life due to his remembrance of death.

Allāhu A’alām.
Bārakallāhu fīkum.
Jazākumullahu Khayran.
