The Haafidh and Historian Muhammad bn Sa’ad bn Muni’i Al-Baghdaadi wrote in his book At-Tabaqaat Al-Kubra that in the Year of the Ramaadah when draught and famine befell the Companions of the Rasul salallahu alayhi wasallam, the Khalifa Umar bn Al-Khattaab radiyallahu ‘anhu would spend his entire night in Qiyaam, asking Allah to forgive the Ummah and to not destroy it during his own reign.
Umar radiyallahu anhu saw the disaster as a result of his own sins and he would pray fervently to Allah that the destruction of the People should not be as a result of his own actions or inactions.
He addressed the people saying:
“O People! Fear Allah in yourselves and in that which is hidden from people in your private lives. I have been tried with leadership over you and you have been tried with followership toward me. Then it’s not possible that wrath (of Allah) befalls me and exempts you or befalls you and exempts me, except that it befalls me and you altogether. Come on together then let’s make Dua to Allah to rectify our hearts and be merciful to us and lift from us this difficulty and pain.. ”
How numerous are our sins today in our private lives that we have hidden from man and cannot hide from Allah?
This is our time to return to Him in repentance that He may take away from ourselves and from our Ummah this difficulty.
O Allah! We repent to you with regret and desperation.
Barakallahu Fikum.
