_Imām Ibn Qudāmah -rahimahullāh-_
Said:
*SHOWING OFF AND ITS BRANCHES.*
Know verily that – may the blessings of Allāh Ta’āla be upon you – that, some of verses of Qur’an and narrations of the Rasūl salallāhu ālayhi wasallam has condemned the act of showing off.
In this, Allāh says:
_فَوَيْلٌ لِّلْمُصَلِّينَ. الَّذِينَ هُمْ عَن صَلَاتِهِمْ سَاهُونَ. الَّذِينَ هُمْ يُرَاءُونَ_
_So woe to the praying ones, Who are unmindful of their prayers,Who do (good) to be seen,_
Suratu Al-Mā’ūn, verse 4-6.
And He says:
_Therefore whoever hopes to meet his Lord, he should do good deeds, and not join any one in the service of his Lord._
Suratu Al-Kahf, verse 11.
It is reported by Abū Hurairah who said:
The Rasūl salallāhu ālayhi wasallam said: Allāh Ta’āla said:
_ﺃَﻧَﺎ ﺃَﻏْﻨَﻰ ﺍﻟﺸُّﺮَﻛَﺎﺀِ ﻋَﻦْ ﺍﻟﺸِّﺮْﻙِ ﻣَﻦْ ﻋَﻤِﻞَ ﻋَﻤَﻠًﺎ ﺃَﺷْﺮَﻙَ ﻓِﻴﻪِ ﻣَﻌِﻲ ﻏَﻴْﺮِﻱ ﺗَﺮَﻛْﺘُﻪُ ﻭَﺷِﺮْﻛَﻪُ._
_Verily, I have no need of any partners. Whoever performs a deed in which he associates another besides me, I will abandon him and his partner._

And know that, the word (الرياء i.e showing off) is derived from the word (الرؤية I.e watching or looking), while the word السمعة(reputation) is gotten from السماع(hearing).
Thus, the insincere person always shows people that which will make him to earn some benefits from them and these is of different stages.
