Showing off with words.* This involves the showing off of the people of knowledge of the deen with admonitions, remembrance, the memorisation of narrations for argumentation purposes, and to display their deep rootedness in knowledge and evidences to indicate their vastness about the knowledge of the past salaf.
And also, the movement of the lips with Zikr in the presence of others to show that they of the devout worshippers, and showing anger for munkarāt amongst people, and the lowering of voice and making it smoother for the recitation of the glorious Qur’an to indicate their fear of Allāh, sorrow and the likes.
As for the people of the dunya, they used to show off by memorizing poems, proverbs and beautifying their speeches for the audience and the likes.
*4). Showing off with deeds.* This includes the showing off with long standing, prostration, sujud, and showing piety during the prayer, and the likes.
Likewise, showing off with fasting, jihad, hajj, Charity, and the likes.
