_Imām Ibn Qudāmah -rahimahullāh-_
Said:
But if he is delighted when sighted by others during his ‘Ibādāt for the status he might attain in their heart and so that they can praise, honor him and attend to his needs, then, this is disliked and blameworthy.
And if it was said:
What about the hadith of Abū Hurairah Radiyallāhu anhu which said: A man said: Oh the Messenger salallāhu ālayhi wasallam, (what is the situation) of a man who did a good deed, then others find out about it and that makes him happy, when he is sighted by others, he is pleased, The Rasūl salallāhu ālayhi wasallam said:
له أجران : أجر السر، وأجر العلانية
_The man will have two Rewards: the reward for doing it in secret and the reward for doing it openly( so that others may copy him in that regard)._
Answer: The above hadith is Da’īf(weak), and it was transmitted by Imām At-tirmidhi(7/59), and he said: this Hadith is gharīb.
Though, some ulama gave the hadith a different meaning that is: for him to be pleased when praised by others due to his good deeds because people are the witnesses of Allāh in the earth. In this context, the Rasūl salallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam said:
_أنتم شهداء الله في الأرض._
_You are Allah’s witnesses in the earth._
Transmitted by Imām Muslim#949 from the hadith of Anas Ibn Mālik Radiyallāhu anhu.
And also, Imām Muslim(#2642) transmitted another hadith from Abu Dharr Radiyallāhu anhu which says:
_”ﻗِﻴﻞَ ﻟِﺮَﺳُﻮﻝِ ﺍﻟﻠَّﻪِ ﺻﻠﻰ ﺍﻟﻠﻪ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ ﻭﺳﻠﻢ ﺃَﺭَﺃَﻳْﺖَ ﺍﻟﺮَّﺟُﻞَ ﻳَﻌْﻤَﻞُ ﺍﻟْﻌَﻤَﻞَ ﻣِﻦَ ﺍﻟْﺨَﻴْﺮِ ﻭَﻳَﺤْﻤَﺪُﻩُ ﺍﻟﻨَّﺎﺱُ ﻋَﻠَﻴْﻪِ ﻗَﺎﻝَ ” ﺗِﻠْﻚَ ﻋَﺎﺟِﻞُ ﺑُﺸْﺮَﻯ ﺍﻟْﻤُﺆْﻣِﻦِ.”_
_It was said to Rasūl (ﷺ): What is your opinion about the person who has done good deeds and the people praise him? He said: It is glad tidings for a believer which he has received in this world._
But if he is pleased and delighted with the praises of others on him due to his good deeds and loves to be honored without any tangible reason, then no doubt, it is Ar-riyaa(show off) in this case.
