Imām Ibn Qudāmah Al-Maqdisī -rahimahullāh-
Said:
2.) Means that are not decisive, but most often than not the goals cannot be achieved without them.
For example, traveling in a deserts without proper preparation for food or water. This act is forbidden because he is commanded to make proper preparation for his journey, for the Rasūl Salallāhu’alayhi wasallam always makes preparation whenever he wants to embark on journey.
3.) means that are obviously doubtful regarding getting to their goals such as considering the thorough details of earning livelihood.
If his aims and deeds are within the context of shar’i, then such act falls within tawakkul, but if he seeks for luxuries, then he will be counted amongst the greedy ones.
And lack of searching for sustenance is not of tawakkul in anyway. Rather it is the act of the lazy ones who prefer comfort and now used tawakkul as a pretext for their goal.
‘Umar Radiyallāhu anhu said:
Al-Mutawakkal is as though one who cultivates field and relies on Allāh.
