_Imām Ibn Qudāmah Al-Maqdisi -rahimahullāh-_
Said:
*THE EVIL OF THE DUNYA.*
Know verily – may the blessings of Allāh Ta’āla be upon you – that, there are many verses in the glorious Qur’an which shows the shortcomings and effects of the dunya and also, some verses directs one to shun away from it and to take what suffices one for one’s journey.
In this regard, Allāh says:
_ﺯُﻳِّﻦَ ﻟِﻠﻨَّﺎﺱِ ﺣُﺐُّ ﺍﻟﺸَّﻬَﻮَﺍﺕِ ﻣِﻦَ ﺍﻟﻨِّﺴَﺎﺀِ ﻭَﺍﻟْﺒَﻨِﻴﻦَ ﻭَﺍﻟْﻘَﻨَﺎﻃِﻴﺮِ ﺍﻟْﻤُﻘَﻨْﻄَﺮَﺓِ ﻣِﻦَ ﺍﻟﺬَّﻫَﺐِ ﻭَﺍﻟْﻔِﻀَّﺔِ ﻭَﺍﻟْﺨَﻴْﻞِ ﺍﻟْﻤُﺴَﻮَّﻣَﺔِ ﻭَﺍﻟْﺄَﻧْﻌَﺎﻡِ ﻭَﺍﻟْﺤَﺮْﺙِ ﺫَﻟِﻚَ ﻣَﺘَﺎﻉُ ﺍﻟْﺤَﻴَﺎﺓِ ﺍﻟﺪُّﻧْﻴَﺎ ﻭَﺍﻟﻠَّﻪُ ﻋِﻨْﺪَﻩُ ﺣُﺴْﻦُ ﺍﻟْﻤَﺂﺏِ* ﻗُﻞْ ﺃَﺅُﻧَﺒِّﺌُﻜُﻢْ ﺑِﺨَﻴْﺮٍ ﻣِﻦْ ﺫَﻟِﻜُﻢْ ﻟِﻠَّﺬِﻳﻦَ ﺍﺗَّﻘَﻮْﺍ ﻋِﻨْﺪَ ﺭَﺑِّﻬِﻢْ ﺟَﻨَّﺎﺕٌ ﺗَﺠْﺮِﻱ ﻣِﻦْ ﺗَﺤْﺘِﻬَﺎ ﺍﻟْﺄَﻧْﻬَﺎﺭُ ﺧَﺎﻟِﺪِﻳﻦَ ﻓِﻴﻬَﺎ ﻭَﺃَﺯْﻭَﺍﺝٌ ﻣُﻄَﻬَّﺮَﺓٌ ﻭَﺭِﺿْﻮَﺍﻥٌ ﻣِﻦَ ﺍﻟﻠَّﻪِ ﻭَﺍﻟﻠَّﻪُ ﺑَﺼِﻴﺮٌ ﺑِﺎﻟْﻌِﺒَﺎﺩِ*_
_Beautified for mankind is love of the joys (that come) from women and offspring; and stored-up heaps of gold and silver, and horses branded (with their mark), and cattle and land. That is comfort of the life of the world. Allah! With Him is a more excellent abode. Say: Shall I inform you of something better than that? For those who keep from evil, with their Lord, are Gardens underneath which rivers flow wherein they will abide, and pure companions, and contentment from Allah. Allah is Seer of His bondmen._
*Suratu Āli I’mrān, verse 14, 15.*
Allah says:
_وما الحياة الدنيا إلا متاع الغرور._
The life of this world is but comfort of illusion.
*Suratu Āli-i’mrān, verse 185.*
In another verse, Allāh says:
_إنما مثل الحياة الدنيا كماء أنزلناه من السماء_
_The similitude of the life of the world is only as water which We send down from the sky._
*Suratu Yūnus, verse 24.*
Also, Allāh Taā’la says:
_اعلموا أنما الحياة الدنيا لعب ولهو وزينة._
_Know that the life of the world is only play, and idle talk, and pageantry…._
*Suratu Al-hadīd, verse 20.*
And where He says:
_وزخرفا وإن كل ذلك لما متاع الحياة الدنيا والآخرة عند ربك للمتقين._
_And ornaments of gold. Yet all that would have been but a provision of the life of the world. And the Hereafter with your Lord would have been for those who keep from evil._
*Suratu Az-zukhruf, verse 35.*
And lastly, Allāh also says:
_فأعرض عن من تولى عن ذكرنا ولم يرد إلا الحياة(٢٩) ذلك مبلغهم من العلم…._
_Then withdraw from him who fleets from Our remembrance and desires but the life of the world {29}. Such is their sum of knowledge.{30}._
