On the authority of Abu Hurairah -May Allah be pleased with him- reported that the Messenger of Allah- salallahu alayhi wasallam- said,
“Allah the Exalted and Majestic said: ‘Every act of the son of Adam is for him, except As-Siyam (the fasting) which is (exclusively) for Me, and I will reward him for it.’ Fasting is a shield. When anyone of you is observing fast, he should neither indulge in obscene language nor should he raise his voice (in anger); and if anyone reviles him or tries to quarrel with him, he should say: ‘I am fasting.’ By Him in Whose Hand the soul of Muhammad is, the odor from the breath of the fasting person is better and purer to Allah than the fragrance of musk perfume. The one who fasts, has two times of delight: he is delighted when he breaks his fast and also delighted (by virtue of his fast) when he meets his Lord.”]

LESSONS FROM THE HADITH
This excellent hadith directs us to the virtues of Fasting in different ways.
♦ The multiplication of the reward of fasting is not limited like other good deeds since fasting is a secret between Allah and His servant. What a magnificent reward.
♦ Fasting in itself contains all the three forms of sabr (patience); sabr in obeying the commandment of Allah (of fasting), sabr in refraining from His prohibitions (during fasting) and sabr upon the Qadar (decree) of Allah (of hunger, thirst and weakness). This makes the one who fast sincerely to be among the saabirun (the patient ones in the sight of Allah).
♦ Fasting is shield from hell and also against all obscenity and vices that is why the fasting person is not to raise his voice in anger or indulge in any quarrel even when provoked.
♦ Fasting is in high and dignified position with Allah, to the extent that the odor of the breath of the fasting person (although detested by people) is pure and beloved to Him, because it came as a result of His obedience (from fasting).
♦ The first joy of the fasting person when breaking his fast, is as a result of what Allah enabled him to accomplish (of fasting) and what has being relieved for him of the fasting prohibitions. And the second joy when he meets Allah, is as a result of what he saw of the great reward for his fast.
May Allah accept from us our fasting and grant us the reward in full. Aameen.
