Imām Ibn Qudāmah -rahimahullāh-
Said:
And also of the verse which conveys fear, where Allah says:
وَالْعَصْرِ(١) إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ لَفِي خُسْرٍ(٢).
I swear by the time, (1), Most surely man is in loss,(2).
Sūratu Al-‘Asr, Verse 1,2.
And then Allāh mentioned four conditions in the sūratu Al-‘Asr which are used to secure oneself from khusrān, where He says:
إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ
Except those who believe and do good, and enjoin on each other truth, and enjoin on each other patience.
And if not for the mercy of Allāh Ta’āla upon His pious servants by placing rest on their hearts with hope; they would have been destroyed due to fear
And Abū Ad-dardā Radiyallāhu anhu said:
None feel secured on his Īmān to be taken before death except he his deprived from it.
It was reported that, when Sufyān Ath-thawrī Rahimahullāhu was on his death bed, he shed tears, a man then said to him:
Oh Abā ‘Abdullāhi, are you thinking of your sins, sufyān Ath-thawrī then reply by saying: wallāhi my sins are less worthy than this, but I fear that my imān should be removed before my death.
Sahl Rahimahullāhu used to say:
The murīd used to fear less being tried with sins, while the ‘Ārif used to fear less being tried with Kufr.
And in this context, it was reported that a prophet amongst the prophets complained to Allāh Ta’āla regarding hunger and lack of wears, then Allāh ‘Azzawajal inspired him:
My servant, are you not pleased that I protected your heart against Kufr so you asked for worldly gains?! He then took dust and placed on his head, and said: I am pleased oh Allāh, Oh Allāh protect me against Kufr.
If this is the case of the fear of the knowledgeable and pious ones despite their deep rooted knowledge and good deeds, then shouldn’t the weak ones fear more.?
