_Imām Ibn Qudāmah Al-Maqdisi -rahimahullāh-_
Said:
*WAYS OF REFINING CHARACTERS*
Know verily, we have mentioned that, moderation and balancing between laxity and excessiveness in characters is what gives light to the heart and purifies it, and shifting a little bit from that is a sickness and disease to the heart.
Thus, the similitude of the heart in curing its diseases is like that of the body, the way the body cannot be upright and healthy except by taking what will give the body its nutrients such as food and fruits, likewise, the heart cannot attain its sound condition except by purifying its diseases, and giving it what it needs of knowledge and wisdom.
Also, if the body is healthy and sound, the work of the doctor is just to Safeguard the good condition of the body and protect it from any form of diseases, but if the body is sick, then, the work of the doctor is to secure the body from its illness and bring it back to its proper condition.
Likwise, if the heart is pure, good and has a refined character, what is needed in this case, is just to see on how to maintain the good condition of the heart and make it stronger against any diseases, and if the heart is weak, sick and deficient, then, seeking for the means of how to return the heart to its normal condition is the next step to be carried out.
