” Allah will not look ( on the day of resurrection with his mercy and compassion ) at the one who lets his garment drag on the ground out of pride ( or arrogance ) ” . Agreed upon ( by Bukhaari and Muslim ) .
The hadith shows the importance of the following:
1. It shows that it is haraam to drag our garment out of pride or arrogance . This hadith applies to both man and woman . This is because the Messenger of Allah – salallaahu alayhi wasallam – said:” Allah will not look at the one …..” I.e whether man or woman . However , in the case of the women , there is rukhsah ( dispensation) given to them by the Messenger of Allah – salallaahu alayhi wasallam . Umm salamah radiyallahu anha understand that this hadith is also applicable to them and she said : ” what should the women do with their hems ? ” . The Messenger of Allah – salallaahu alayhi wasallam – said : “slacken them a hand span ” . So she said : ” then their feet will be uncovered ” . He said : ” then slacken them a forearms length and do not add to to that . ” . Transmitted and recorded by Imam Tirmizi in his “Sunan “#1731 and Imam Nisaahi in his “Sunan”#5336 . Shaykh Al- Albani Rahimahullah declared the hadith to be Sahih in his “Sahihul – Tirmizi ” .
2 .It shows that anyone who dragged his garment not out of conceit will not be punished . However , there is another hadith that still forbids that. The hadith is transmitted by Imam Bukhaari in his “Sahih ” #5787 .The Messenger of Allah – salallaahu alayhi wasallam – said: “The part of the garment ( I.e for men ) which hangs below the ankles is in the hellfire ” . This implies , any parts of the garment ( I.e for men ) that is below the ankles is in the hellfire whether it is been dragged out of conceit or not as explained by some ulamaa .
3. It shows that Islam is a religion that deals with neatness and purity
4. It also shows that extravagance and waste are disliked and abhorrent in Islam religion .
