DAILY POST #67
Imaam Ibn Hajar Al-‘Asqalaani – rahimahullaah – said:
It is reported from Sahl bin Sa’d radiyallaahu anhu- who said :
A man came to the Messenger of Allah -salallaahu alayhi wasallam and said: “O Allah`s Messenger, direct me to a deed which if I practice it, Allah will love me and people will also love me.” He then said:
“practice abstinence in this dunya, Allah will love you, and abstain from desiring what is in hand of people, they will love you.”
Transmitted and recorded by Imaam Ibn Majah in his “Sunan”#4102 and Imam Al Albani declared the hadith to be sahih in “Assahiha”#944.
COMMENTARY
The hadith shows the importance of the following:
1. It indicates that when one practice abstinence in this dunya, Allah will love the person and be pleased with him. That means, for one to attain Allah’s pleasure, one should practice abstinence. However, this does not means one should abstained himself completely from this dunya. But take those things that are necessity in this dunya and those things that will assist you in practicing your religion properly and abstain from luxuries or amusement of this dunya.
2. It shows that when one abstains from desiring what is in the hand of people, they will surely appreciate and love him. And that is nature of man. They always love the person that will not add his load or burden to their personal problems. For this, they will feel relieve of his problems and Love him.
3. It shows that it is allowed for one to strive hard to win people’s heart in order to guide them to what will benefit them in this dunya and hereafter not for personal interest. Hence, hearts are not won by force, wealth or status. They are won by much less sacrifice. Abstain from what they have and be generous, kind and soft to them. By so doing, they will love and care for you.
